Ladakh in June: the complete real guide

June is the most popular month for Ladakh. It's also the month most travellers get it wrong — pushing too hard, moving too fast, skipping permits, and spending two days flat in their hotel wondering why their head feels like it's filled with wet concrete.
Here's what actually works.
The altitude reality
Leh sits at 3,524 metres. Most Indian cities are between 0 and 900 metres. Your body needs time to adjust — this is not optional and not negotiable.
Day 1 in Leh: Rest. Drink water. Walk slowly. Eat light. Do not trek, do not take a taxi to a monastery, do not insist you're fine. You're not fine yet.
Day 2: You may be fine. Short walks, a monastery nearby. No long drives.
Day 3 onward: Most people acclimatise within 48–72 hours. If you've flown directly to Leh (which is common from Delhi), give it the full 48 before pushing altitude further.
The Manali-Leh highway alternative: if you drive up instead of fly, you acclimatise gradually over 2 days. Your body adjusts to 4,000 metres as you cross it. This is medically better and scenically incomparable. The highway opens in late May or early June depending on snowmelt.
"Altitude doesn't care how fit you are. It adjusts its rules for no one."
The permit situation in 2025–2026
Two permits are currently required for certain areas:
Inner Line Permit (ILP): Required for Nubra Valley, Pangong Lake, Tso Moriri, Hanle, and areas near the LAC. Obtained online through the Ladakh Tourism portal or in person at the DC office in Leh. Processing takes 1–2 hours in person. Budget ₹100–300 per person.
Wildlife permit: Required for Hemis National Park (snow leopard territory). Available at the park office.
Don't skip permits — checkpoints are staffed and the fine is not worth the time.
What June gives you
- Pangong Lake in June: ice has melted, the blue is at its most vivid, crowds are smaller than July–August
- Khardung La pass: generally open from late May; snowfall can close it briefly — check the day before
- Nubra Valley: cold nights (bring a proper layer), warm days, the Bactrian camels are photogenic and the dunes feel surreal
- Bike trip season: June is when the riding community descends — if you want quieter roads, go earlier in the month
Roads worth knowing about
The Srinagar-Leh highway (NH1) opens approximately mid-April. The Manali-Leh highway (NH3) opens approximately late May. Both are subject to landslides and snowfall — check BRO (Border Roads Organisation) updates 24 hours before travel.
Zanskar Valley opens fully in June–July. If you have 10+ days, a detour through Zanskar — including Rangdum Monastery and the Padum valley — is one of the most remote, beautiful drives in India.
What to pack
Cold nights regardless of daytime temperature: down jacket, thermal base layer, good socks. Sunscreen SPF 50+ — UV exposure at altitude is severe. Water: carry more than you think you need. Diamox (for altitude): ask your doctor before going; some travellers swear by it, some don't need it.
